Go to PHLPost: Be relevant despite competition

Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Former special assistant to the president Christopher Go yesterday challenged the Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) to continue making itself relevant despite stiff competition from modern forms of communication.

Go, the guest of honor at PHLPost’s 251st anniversary celebration, said that since it could not stop the public from patronizing modern technology as a means of communication, PHLPost should still strive to become a viable option.

“When it comes to the new technology, such as the cellphone and the internet, and the booming private courier service, the number of PHLPost service users had dwindled. But it continues to be an important form of communication for Filipinos because it is less expensive,” Go said.

He added that there are still people, agencies and companies that continue to patronize the postal corporation to deliver their packages, documents and letters.

“Even if there are text messages and email, there are still transactions where you would need the traditional letter. Maybe, this is what we need to focus on. The people would no longer revert to the old ways. We should even support the new methods of communication. But when it comes to services, let us work to make the PHLPost the primary option for the people,” he said.

In order to make PHLPost relevant again to the lives of the people, however, the agency must give them excellent service every day, according to Go.

“We must make sure that they are attended to promptly and courteously and their packages and parcels are handled carefully and delivered on time. If we gain the trust of the people, success will just follow. Everything related to postal service, including philately or stamp-collecting, will be gradually revived,” he said.

Go also thanked the PHLPost for its service, especially the postmen who, regardless of rain or the scorching heat of the sun, remain committed to deliver the people’s letters or packages.

“For that, I salute you,” he said.
