MANILA, Philippines (Updated 1:59 p.m.) — Classes and work were suspended on Tuesday, July 17, by local government units and private institutions because of monsoon rains enhanced by "Henry," which has developed into a tropical storm and already left the Philippine area of responsibility, according to the 11 a.m. bulletin of PAGASA.

The heavy downpour has prompted the Palace to suspend around noon classes in public schools and work in government offices in Metro Manila starting 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has also lifted the number coding scheme around 1 p.m., except in the cities of Las Piñas and Makati.

Earlier, the following cities in Metro Manila have announced class suspensions:  Caloocan (preschool to elementary); Las Piñas; Malabon; Manila; Marikina; Makati (afternoon classes); Muntinlupa (afternoon classes); Parañaque (afternoon classes, all levels); Pasay; Quezon City (afternoon, all levels); and Taguig (afternoon classes).

  • Mamburao
  • Sablayan

Palawan

  • Coron

Pampanga

  • Lubao

Rizal

  • Cainta
  • Morong
  • San Mateo

Romblon

  • Alcantara
  • Ferrol
  • Looc
  • Odiongan (preschool to high school)
  • Romblon
  • Santa Maria (elementary to high school)

Zambales

  • Olongapo City

Work cancellations

Aside from government work in Metro Manila, Pampanga also announced a suspension of work in government offices starting 1 p.m. today. The Senate and Supreme Court also announced work suspensions for the day.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University declared work suspension starting 2 p.m.
