Duterte threatens to shutdown ‘cesspool’ Boracay

MANILA, Philippines — Calling the Philippines’ top tourist draw a “cesspool,” President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday threatened to shut down Boracay, saying the garbage problem in the world-famous island is becoming a major health and environmental concern.
“During days when I was there, the garbage was just 20 meters away from the beach. At a distance you see a cotton balls of Boracay is a white sand. But you go into the water, it’s smelly. Smell of what? S***,” Duterte said in a business forum in Davao City.
“There it’s destroying the environment or the Republic of the Philippines and creating a disaster coming,” he added.
The president said he has ordered Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu to “clean the g ***** thing” in six months.
“There will be a time that no more foreigner will go there because he will have... when he goes back to the plane to where he belongs, he will be full of s*** going back and forth to the restroom,” the firebrand leader said.
Boracay Island is famous for its powdery white sand beach and vibrant nightlife.
Boracay continues to gain global recognition as it was named the top winter escape destination in the world by international travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler last December.
In June 2017, Cimatu warned a mayor of a town in Aklan to address the garbage menace on Boracay Island or face charges.
