MANILA, Philippines — Self-rated poverty in the country slightly increased to 10.9 million Filipino families in the third quarter of 2017, according to the latest survey of Social Weather Stations (SWS).
The survey, conducted from Sept. 23 to 27 with the results released on Friday, showed that 47 percent of the respondents consider their families as poor.
It was three points higher than the 44 percent or 10.1 million Filipino families who considered their families as poor based on a similar survey conducted in June.
SWS said the three-point increase can be attributed to the sharp increase in self-rated poverty in Luzon, offsetting declines in the Visayas and Mindanao.
Survey results showed that self-rated poverty increased in Metro Manila (28 percent to 31 percent) and the rest of Luzon (34 percent to 50 percent), while it decreased in the Visayas (64 percent to 56 percent) and Mindanao (57 percent to 45 percent).
The latest self-rated poverty is higher than the 42 percent in September last year, the first such survey since President Duterte took over the presidency.
It increased to 44 percent in December 2016 and 50 percent in March 2017, then dropped to 44 percent last June.
Meanwhile, the number of Filipinos who said that their families are “food-poor” or those who rated themselves as poor based on the food that they eat, remained at 32 percent.
Compared from survey results last June, the number of those who rated their families as food poor increased in Metro Manila (16 percent to 20 percent) and the rest of Luzon (27 percent to 32 percent)
The figures decreased in the Visayas (44 percent to 38 percent) and Mindanao (41 percent to 34 percent).
The survey, conducted on 1,500 Filipino household heads, had an error margin of plus/minus 2.5 percent for the national percentages.
