MANILA, Philippines — Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella on Thursday said President Rodrigo Duterte would allow public protest related to late President Ferdinand Marcos’ upcoming burial at the Libingan ng mg Bayani.

Abella said the president still approves of public demonstration against the burial of Marcos. He added that Duterte only assigned a minimum number of policemen to direct traffic in the areas where protests would be held.

"President Rodrigo R. Duterte declared this morning that he will allow public demonstration protesting the burial of former president Ferdinand Marcos," Abella said in a statement.

Several anti-Marcos groups composed of relatives of martial law victims and civil organizations, among others, expressed plans to hold a rally opposing Duterte’s decision to allow the burial of Marcos at the national heroes' cemetery.

On Sunday, Duterte reiterated his decision to approve Marcos’ burial as the latter served as president and soldier. He said the president is qualified to be buried there based on the Constitution.

Duterte said he is willing to bury Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani during his campaign. He said the decision will unite the country, citing the clamor of Ilocanos.
