Piñol wants coconut expert to head PCA
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Incoming agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol wants a coconut scientist not a politician to head the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) as part his plan to revive the industry.
Piñol’s decision came after visiting the San Ramon PCA Research Center at Sitio San Ramon, Barangay Talisayan.
He said during his visit that he was convinced of the need to implement a nationwide rehabilitation and replanting of coconut.
Piñol said he might recommend some scientists from the research center to occupy the top position in the PCA.
He added that it was time to employ knowledgeable people in the agency.
“I don’t think a politician should serve as the head of the PCA. I am not questioning the content of his coconut. But it is better for me to get somebody whose coconut contains nothing but coconut,” he wisecracked.
Piñol was concerned with the need for nationwide rehabilitation and replanting following the massive coconut scale insect known as ‘cocolisap’ since last year.
