MANILA, Philippines - Great disasters that struck the Philippines and neighboring Japan; political controversies of administrations past and present; worldwide unrest and protests; unimaginable crimes that shook the public — these are just some of the stories that caught the attention of the country and the rest of the world. On Dec. 31 before 2011 makes way for 2012, GMA News and Public Affairs takes viewers back on a trip to the year that was.
Take a look back at the biggest movers and shakers of 2011 as GMA presents Trending 2011, GMA 7’s first interactive yearend special where the viewers got to vote for their choice of the year’s biggest news and newsmakers.
Vying for the biggest newsmakers of the year are Pres. Benigno Simeon Aquino III for his relentless campaign against corruption; former Pres. and now Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, whose legacy continues to dominate the political landscape; Justice Sec. Leila de Lima for her pursuit to prosecute government officials accused of corruption and for allegedly defying the country’s highest court; Commissioner Heidi Mendoza for blowing the whistle on the supposed corruption in the military; former Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri who was the first-ever senator in Philippine history to resign for reasons other than to assume another position in government; and Chief Justice Renato Corona for being the first Supreme Court chief in Philippine history to be impeached.
Recall some of the most shocking crimes of 2011 starting off with the mall shooting incidents — one involving two minors — and another crime involving celebrities, including the murder of a member of a political clan.
