CEBU, Philippines — Filipina tennis trailblazer Alex Eala faltered in her bid for a historic gold at the 20th Asian Games

Aichi-Nagoya 2026 after losing to China’s Wang Xiyu in three sets in the women’s singles semifinals on Thursday, October 1, at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Japan.

The World No.18 Eala lost steam after hot start and eventually bowed down to Wang, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Eala thus settled for only bronze medal just like in the 2023 edition of the quadrennial Games in Hangzhou, China.

The tennis gold remained elusive for the Philippines since Johnny Jose minted a gilt in the quadrennial Games way back in 1962.

Meanwhile, veteran archer Amaya Amparo “Aya” Cojuangco delivered a historic silver medal for the Philippines in the women’s individual compound competition.

The 40-year-old Cojuangco showed nerves of steel before eventually falling to Indonesia’s Nurisa Dian Ashrifah, 139-137, in a nerve-wracking final to secure the country’s first-ever Asian Games silver medal in the event.
