Grand finals of year-round CEPCA tourney set December 20

CEBU, Philippines – Everything is already in place for the grand finals of the year-round Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) tournament slated on December 20 at Handuraw Pizza along Gorordo Avenue, Cebu City.

Among those who will see action in the so-called 'Battle of Champions' are two-time grand champion Jimmy Ty Jr., Rey Flores, Arnold Cadiz, Tony Cabibil, Amado Olea Jr., Carlo Maraat, Stein Torres, Jojo Muralla, Peterson Sia, Rogelio Enriquez, Ross Yamyamin, and Martin Kwan for Group A.

The other qualifiers for being monthly champions in Group B are Regelito Hortelano, Ruel Hortelano, Jun Kidlat, Elmer Odango, Jerry Maratas, Felix Balbona, Mike Tinga, Jojo Paredes, Jessa Balbona, Michael Ventulan, Edwin Cablao, and Romy Pialan.

Aside from trophies, the top finisher in both groups will receive P2,500, while the second and third placers will pocket P1,500 and P1,000, respectively.

In a special CEPCA Board meeting presided over by the club's incumbent president Engr. Jerry Maratas the other night at Chika-an Restaurant in Parkmall, the group has also decided to stage a side tournament for non-qualifiers, with the top three winners geeting P1,000, P700 and P500.

Others present were CEPCA founding members Boy Pestaño and Nicnic Climaco, Ruel Hortelano, Jun Kidlat, Jojo Moralla, Engr. Harveyjane Hilvano, and FIDE Arbiter Marvin Ruelan.

The twin events are being held in conjuction with CEPCA's Christmas Party and induction of new members.

Assessment fee is pegged at P250 for guests and P500 for club members inclusive of tournament registration, dinner and drinks.— EBV (FREEMAN)
