NM Ben Macapaz exemplifies love for chess until his last breath

CEBU, Philippines - Even up to his last breath, Cebuano sportsman Benjamin R. Macapaz had shown his flaming passion for chess.

Macapaz, an established National Master and revered tournament organizer in the sport closest to his heart, passed away last May 24 due to heartstroke while playing a simultaneous chess exhibition at Timex. He was 69.

A decorated varsity player who consistently topped various regional and inter-school tournaments spotlighted by his golden performances in the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) during the '60s, Macapaz is also best remembered for being the longest Cebu organizer of the annual Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship.

Macapaz earned his NM status in 1971, the same year he passed the board exams for Certified Public Accountants. A sought-after tournament arbiter, he cemented his status as one of the pillars of Cebu chess by spearheading several chess clinics to aspiring pawnpushers.

Macapaz's remains lie at the Cebu Rolling Hills Chapel in Barangay Banilad, Mandaue City. Interment is scheduled at 3 p.m. today at the Cebu Memorial Park. — (FREEMAN)
