30 teams sign up for Sinulog chessfest

CEBU, Philippines - A total of 30 teams led by defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) have already signed up for the 2012 Sinulog Open Chess Team Tournament this weekend at SM City-Cebu.

The other early registrants include the University of the Visayas and the University of San Carlos with three teams each, University of Cebu with two teams and Cebu Institute of Technology-University and Cebu Doctors' University with one apiece.

Barangays Mabolo and Guadalupe are fielding in one team each, while chess clubs from Talisay, Lapu-Lapu City, Colonnade and Deep Blue are enlisting two teams as well as Opascor, Julie’s Bakeshop, Aboitizland and Handuraw.

The 'Balbona Kids' and three out- of-town squads from Bohol, Dumaguete and Bayawan are also set to see action in the two-day tournament.

A total of P76,000 in cash prize is at stake for the top performing teams and outstanding individual players.
