Bonding moments

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

After experiencing sports during the school break many kids would want to continue now that school has started especially if they really enjoyed playing the game.

If the school where your child goes has a good athletic program, then he or she gets a good chance to continue honing the skills that were learned during the two-month period we always refer to as summer even if we only have the wet and dry season in our country.

Last Tuesday, I was at the golf course very early with my son, who several weeks ago rekindled his interest to play the game after he set his clubs aside for about two years.

Also at the club were two other fathers – Regan King and Zen Pastoriza, who were also with their sons.

Engaging into the same sport, more than anything, is also a great way to bond with your child. Maybe time will come when he or she would be going with those her age, but while you get a chance to enjoy moments with them, take the opportunity.

Many children have taken up the sport of their parents maybe because they were forced to do so or also it could be that they really want to learn the sport that they see their parents take part in.

Now that school has started, try to set aside time for sports aside from all other activities that you hope to do with the children.

In our community at the old Atlas Mines in Toledo, where I spent some good years of my life when my father was still alive, sports activities took up a good part of the time of the families.

Maybe it was because there wasn’t much to watch on TV, there was no Internet, and we didn’t even have the video players called Betamax back in the 1970s.

We spent time at the recreation centers built near the housing compounds for the employees around Toledo City to watch our fathers play or engage in sports ourselves.

With so many distractions, we parents must use a little creativity to encourage the children to develop the love for sports by spending time with them while doing so.

Personally, I have had problems talking to my teenage son, but on the golf course, it seems much easier to do that. We seem to have more to talk about now especially when it comes to sports.

The Alumni Association of Andres Soriano Memorial College La Salle is holding the Animo La Salle 12-K Run on July 10.

Although I read some posts of the alumni association officers on Facebook, I got more information about the event from The Freeman’s resident running guru, who is also a La Sallian from Bacolod – Raffy Uytiepo.

Raffy has been tasked as the race director for the event that will start and finish at the Cebu International Convention Center.

This event is among the many that are being held to celebrate 100 years of La Salle’s existence in the Philippines.

Entry fees are Php 300 for the 12-k, Php 250 for 6-K, and Php 200 for 3-K. You can sign up at RUNNR at Ayala Center Cebu, Casa Ilongga Robinson’s Place Cebu, and at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Proceeds of the event will go to the One La Salle Scholarship Endowment Fund.
