Froilan spikers lead Estaca tourney

CEBU, Philippines - Team Froilan secured the top spot after fending off its opponents during the 1st Estaca Women’s Volleyball Open last Sunday at Estaca, Compostela.

Froilan made an impressive start after trouncing Team Warriors in straight sets, 25-20, 25-15. Then, they went through a three-setter battle before thumping the University of San Carlos, 25-14, 19-25, 25-23.

Former RP Youth member, Genie Sabas and RP team beach volley member, Jusabelle Brillo along with former Nestea Fit Beach Volley champs, Apple Eve Saraum and Erika Camille Verano, spearheaded Team Froilan for the twin victories.

However, Froilan later fell to Roble Shipping Lines, 25-16, 22-25, 20-25 courtesy of Mechelle Matuguina, Cheche Bohol and Southwestern University stalwarts, Raphril Aguilar, Lorie May Layno, Mary Luilyn Pacinio and USJ-R’s Abegail Praca.

Roble Shipping gained another win after routing the Warriors, 25-17, 25-13.

But the gritty, USC belles never allowed to be left behind, as they also bounced back overpowering Roble Shipping, 25-11, 22-25, 25-22.

USC also had to pass through a three set thriller before fending off their comrades, Team Warriors, 23-25, 25-14, 25-20.

Methosheena Bate, Jerymie Montalvo, Niña Irish Cortes, Suzette Panis, Manjie Villaflores, Maggie Montejo, Angelica Ybañez and Akemi Aono powered USC for the triumphs.

The champion will be pocketing P5,000 pesos, the second will have P3,000 while the third and fourth placers will get P2,000 and P1,000, respectively.
