USJ-R bags La Fortuna Cup
Veteran Luther Luke Justiniani scored 29 points to help the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) beat Southwester University (SWU) Cobras last night in the knockout final of the La Fortuna Cup II at the Cebu Coliseum.
Justiniani played heads up basketball throughout the match and was at the forefront of USJ-R’s masterful 102-83 victory over SWU. Justiniani’s performance enabled him to capture the MVP award of the weeklong tournament.
>From a close 46-43 halftime lead, the Jaguars unleashed a big scoring spree to start the third quarter and slowly built up a big lead. USJ-R then went for the kill in the final period to bag the championship without dropping a game. The Jaguars went 6-0 in the tournament.
Coach Edito Salacut said he was very happy with the way his charges played in the championship. He added that the team played unselfish basketball and never let the pressure of maintaining an unbeaten run affect them.
Aside from Justiniani, five other Jaguars scored in double figures with Malinao hitting 14,
Jabe Delfino, who suffered a head injury during the elimination round, played with a bandage around his head and scored eight points.
Eric Zanora led SWU with 14 points with Poligrates and Litorja managing 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The championship was worth P15,000 for the Jaguars while SWU came home with P1o,000. The champions also received a beautifully handcrafted trophy from Lorenzo “Chao” Sy who represented the main sponsors La Fortuna Bakery and La Fortuna Hotel.
