5 Pinoys into 3rd round in US Open 9-ball event

Five Filipino cue artists led by Ronnie Alcano and Jose "Amang" Parica eased through the third round of the 31st US Open 9-Ball Championships at the Chesapeake Convention Center in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Alcano and Parica hurdled their first two assignments with finesse to advance into the next phase together with their fellow countrymen Santos Sambajon, Rodolfo Luat and Lee Van Corteza.
Alcano chopped up Jimmy Garza, 11-4, and Adam Smith, 11-1, to book a third round showdown with Sweden's Marcus Chamat, who earlier downed another Filipino entry Edwin Montal, 4-11.
Parica, last year's losing finalist, was as impressive as Alcano. He opened his title bid with a convincing 11-3 win over Tommy Kay and followed it up with an 11-1 rout of Edward Caurera.
After enjoying a free ride in the opening round, Sambajon and Luat went on to demolish their respective foes. Sambajon drubbed Timmy Hall, 11-6, while Luat sent Brandon Shuff to the left side of the board, 11-5.
Sambajon and Luat take on next Charles Altomare and Rob Brandenburg, respectively.
Corteza, on the other hand, also brightened up his championship campaign with victories over Brandon Perezzo, 11-5 and Lee Holt, 11-4.
Corteza, however, braces for an uphill climb ahead as he collides with former world champion Mika Immonen of Finland in the next round.
Defending champion Alex Pagulayan, meanwhile, sailed on rough waters in his title-retention bid. The Lion won his first match against Korean Shin Young Park, 11-6, but was silenced by Tyler Edey, 8-11, in the second round.
Gandy Valle and Montal suffered the same fate.
Valle mangled Jerry Tarantola, 11-1, but bowed to Chris Bartram, 8-11, while Montal got past Dean Goddard, 11-7, but fell prey to Chamat, 4-11.
Ramil Gallego and Antonio Gabica were the only first round casualties for the Philippines. Gallego was outsmarted by Shane Van Boening, 8-11, while Gabica bluffed at the hands of Jeremy Jones, 4-11.
Despite the absence of some top guns in the likes of Efren Reyes, Francisco Bustamante, Ralf Soquet and Thorsten Hohmann, the field is still replete with talents that include Earl Strickland, Johnny Archer, Alex Pagulayan, Rodney Morris, Corey Deuel, Tony Robles, Mika Immonen, Charlie Williams, Jeremy Jones, Marcus Chamat, Ronnie Alcano and Evgeny Stalev.
