CTU board retains private-sector rep

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu Technological University’s Board of Regents will continue to have Dr. Nerito “Rey” Martinez as its private-sector representative for another two years following his oath-taking on September 1, 2026.

The oath was administered by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson Shirley Agrupis during a ceremony witnessed by Martinez’s wife and other members of the CTU community.

Martinez’s continued service as a private-sector representative is anchored in national laws, CHED issuances, and institutional policies governing the administration, governance, and accountability of state universities and colleges.

Following his reappointment, Martinez expressed his commitment to serving CTU and its students, faculty members, parents, and the entire university community.

“Another two years of Cebu Technological University service as Board of Regent representing the private sector. I will serve with utmost God-given wisdom for the welfare of students, faculty, parents and the CTU family unconditionally,” Martinez said.

He also thanked the members of the evaluation committee, headed by Dr. Ed Monares, for the opportunity to continue serving the university.

Martinez said he looks forward to serving the more than 74,000 students across CTU’s province-wide campuses.

To recall, Martinez was among the members of the Board of Trustees of Cebu Technological State College (CTSC), now CTU, when a board resolution was passed in 2017 for its conversion into a university.

Martinez said that a month after its conversion, a program dubbed “education at the doorsteps” was introduced to bring the university closer to municipalities, expanding CTU from six campuses to its several campuses today.

Also on September 1, 2026, Martinez was recognized as one of the 2026 Outstanding Alumni of Negros Oriental High School (NOHS) in Dumaguete City.

The recognition was part of the school’s TATAK: The Outstanding NOHS Alumni Award, an alumni honors program that recognizes graduates who have demonstrated excellence and made meaningful contributions in fields including education, business, military service, and public governance.

NOHS said the 2026 awardees embody leadership, integrity, and service and serve as an inspiration to present and future generations of Negros Oriental High School graduates.

Martinez’s dual recognition on September 1 highlights his continuing involvement in higher education governance and his contributions to the academic community, while also bringing recognition to his alma mater in Negros Oriental. — (FREEMAN)
