436 arrested in Safer Cities drive
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) apprehended 436 ordinance violators during 237 police operations conducted across Cebu Province last Friday, July 10, under the Safer Cities Initiative.
According to the CPPO, 319 of the violators were fined, while 117 were warned and released following police intervention. Authorities collected a total of ?115,100 in fines and penalties.
The operations resulted in the apprehension of 37 individuals for drinking in public places, 21 for smoking in prohibited public areas, 14 for roaming shirtless in public, 28 minors for violating curfew, seven for using karaoke beyond the prescribed hours, and 319 for violating city and municipal traffic ordinances.
The CPPO said the campaign forms part of the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s Safer Cities Initiative, which aims to reduce crime opportunities through increased police visibility, consistent law enforcement, and close coordination with local government units and communities.
Police Brigadier General Arnold Evangelista Abad, regional director of the Police Regional Office 7 (PRO-7), commended the operating units for their continued commitment to the campaign, saying the consistent enforcement of local ordinances remains vital in preserving public safety and preventing crimes before they occur.
Abad said the initiative continues to produce positive results through proactive law enforcement and community engagement.
He also encouraged local government units and the public to continue working together in promoting discipline, order, and safety in their communities.
Meanwhile, CPPO provincial director Police Colonel Abubakar Udang Mangelen Jr. lauded all police units in Cebu Province for their sustained efforts in implementing the campaign.
Mangelen said every operation under the Safer Cities Initiative reflects the police force’s commitment to protecting communities and keeping streets safe for every Cebuano.
He added that beyond the number of apprehensions, the campaign also demonstrates the CPPO’s determination to enforce the law fairly, encourage public compliance, and maintain peace and order throughout the province.
He said the CPPO will continue to intensify police operations while strengthening partnerships with communities in pursuit of a safer Cebu Province.
