Second phase of Balamban road project starts

CEBU, Philippines —  Farmers in the mountain barangays of Balamban town in midwest Cebu province will soon find it easier to transport their produce downhill once the Capitol’s P54.8-million road concreting project there will be completed.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia led the groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase of the six-kilometer provincial road from Barangay Poblacion to Barangay Lamesa last Mar. 4.

The second phase will consist of four kilometers of road stretch measuring up to 6.1 meters wide and nine inches thick.

According to Sugbo News, the Capitol’s news arm, the road will pass through 11 barangays of the town -- Vito, Singsing, Hingatmonan, Liki, Cabagdalan, Lamesa, Luka, Ginatilan, Cabasiangan, Bayong, and Matun-ob.

Hingatmonan barangay captain Raymond Panulde expressed his gratitude to the Cebu provincial government for the project saying it will help their residents in delivering their agricultural products to the market.

Balamban is a first-class municipality of Cebu province composed of 28 barangays. Although the town faces the Tañon Strait and has low lands, some of its portions are hilly and are being cultivated for various agricultural crops.

During the event, Garcia asked the cooperation of residents living along the road to allow small portion of the road for the widening project.

“Hangyo nako ni kay gusto man ta og nindot nga dan. Asa man napadung, magdugay man ning kalsada kay mabaga naman na (I’m appealing to you to cooperate. After all, who will ultimately benefit from it? The new road will last long since it will be thick),” the governor said.

Aside from this project, the governor also signaled the start of the second phase of the 1.7-kilometer Liki-Cabagdalan road, which is worth P12.2 million. — JMD (FREEMAN)
