Security preps complete for Cebu’s annual feast

CEBU, Philippines —  The Sinulog 2020 security preparation is already 100 percent complete and the authorities are reminding the public to expect stricter measures, said Cebu City Police Office Police Officer-in-Charge Colonel Engelbert Soriano.

“Signal disruption will push through during specific hours of days on January 18 and 19,” said Soriano, after attending the final coordination meeting with the Sinulog Foundation and all the stakeholders.

Soriano added that there will be a signal shut-off, but all the security personnel involved will have an exclusive communication line dedicated to the security forces.

Possible late minor changes were tackled during the said meeting, as everyone is focused on the safety and security of the people during the Sinulog 2020.

The authorities have confirmed that backpacks will not be permitted inside the Basilica del Sto. Nino and at the Cebu City Sports Center.

“Doon po sa open areas, like parades, processions and everything, we still discouraged bringing these kasi magkakaroon tayo ng hassle kapag sinubject to inspection ng Armed Forces and securities yung bag,” Soriano explained.

Transparent bags are also not encouraged by Soriano, as it will create hassle for both parties.

There will be no station for people to put their backpacks or big bags, as the city lacks space and manpower due to the number of people who will be attending the event.

At least 2,000 personnel from the Philippine National Police coming from different police stations of Region 7 will be deployed for the festivity.

Soriano also said that Cebu City police personnel will be talking to the police personnel in the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-lapu for better coordination and execution.

There will also be around 10,000 to 12,000 of civilian volunteers who will also help in the security plans. These include the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Reserve Officers' Training Corps volunteers, radio groups, and many more.

“We already have a good game plan, yung execution na lang ang kulang namin,” Soriano said.  Katrina Alvarez, USJ-R Intern, GAN (FREEMAN)
