Local politicians tightening security

CEBU, Philippines - At least 10 local chief executives in Cebu have asked for security as the campaign period for local candidates draws near, said Senior Supt. Clifford Gairanod, chief of the Cebu City Police Office. 

Gairanod said some of those who have called him have asked to retain their security escorts, but the same will not be allowed unless the approval comes from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Three weeks ago, Gairanod issued a memorandum recalling the close-in security of local chief executives upon the directive of Philippine National Police Director General Ricardo Marquez.

The exemptions to the order are the security detail of incumbent governors and congressmen.

Gairanod said the best thing for politicians to do is request formally to Comelec.

 “Para fair naman kasi kawawa naman yung police natin na ma-caught in crossfire sila,” Gairanod said.

Gairanod said the request will be deliberated first by Comelec and the Regional Joint Peace and Security Coordinating Center to assess the threat of the requesting politician.

Meanwhile, Gairanod said they are on the process of verifying information about politicians involved in narco-politics.

“Dako man gud na siya nga accusation. Dili ta maka-accuse dayon ana. Kailangan ta og ebidensya,” he said.

He also directed his men to intensify checkpoints owing to the prevalence of the crime despite police operations.

“Naa gihapon mga shooting incidents in spite and despite sa mga checkpoints nga gibuhat namo. Naa gihapon mga shooting incidents, theft and robbery,” he said.

Gairanod said he will inspect the checkpoints from time to time to ensure plans do not just stay on paper.

“Kay basin kutob ra sa drawing-drawing ba. Di ko ganahan anang for compliance lang,” said Gairanod.  (FREEMAN)
