Man charged for trying to stab dad

Mylen P. Manto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A 35-year-old man is facing charges before court for allegedly attempting to kill his father, a retired policeman.

Prosecutor III Simaco Labata held Odyssuis Cartagena alias Maymay, a resident of Barangay Cogon-Ramos, Cebu City, for trial for attempted parricide.

“…accused armed with a knife, with deliberate intent and with intent to kill, did then and there attack, assault and use personal violence upon his father, Osmundo Cartagena, by then and there stabbing the latter with the use of the said instrument but missed him,” read the document.

Labata recommended P120,000 bail for Odyssuis’ temporary liberty.

Osmundo, 77, alleged that his son attempted to kill him on January 19 around 11 p.m. when he refused to give his son money.

“Knowing of his vices, as a retired policeman, I turn down his demand. My denial has angered him, which drove him to pull out a knife and attempted to stab me but missed. In the height of his anger he broke the handle of the knife,” the sworn statement read.

Osmundo arrested his son, through citizen’s arrest, and turned Odyssius over to the responding police.

PO2 Jomarie Jay Montecino and PO2 Nelson Gabucan alleged that while they were at their station, they received a call seeking for assistance.

Upon arrival at the crime scene, police officers noted that Osmundo declared Odyssuis under arrest for attempted parricide.

Policemen were able to recover the three-inch long knife allegedly used by Odyssuis when he tried to stab his father.   (FREEMAN)
