Brgy captain shot, hurt by drunk nephew

Bryner L. Diaz - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A barangay captain was shot and injured to the leg by his drunken nephew whom he tried to pacify for going amuck Saturday night in Barangay Amatugan, Tuburan.

Amatugan Barangay Captain Braulio Umandac, 54, landed in the hospital while his nephew Joseph Umandac, 24, was arrested and detained. The suspect was also seized with a gun.

As per investigation, the younger Umandac was initially restrained by barangay tanod, Isidro Lapus and a bystander after the suspect allegedly went wild and fired indiscriminately a gun, alarming the neighbors.

Lapus and the bystander were able to confiscate the revolver from Umandac, not noticing that the suspect was concealing another weapon on his back.

Police Officer 1 Julius Edaño of Tuburan Police said Barangay Captain Umandac arrived and tried to pacify his nephew, but the latter instead drew a gun from his back and shot his uncle.

The barangay captain was able to parry the weapon but he was still hit in the left leg.

The suspect was eventually subdued and arrested while the victim was brought to Tuburan District Hospital for medical treatment.

The barangay tanod turned over the suspect to the police station.

Police officers were not able to recover the improvised shotgun locally known as “sumpak,” which was used by the suspect in shooting the victim.

The suspect is currently detained at Tuburan Police Station while the police are studying what possible charges can be filed against him.  (FREEMAN)
