Septuagenarian found dead by roadside

CEBU, Philippines - A lifeless body of an old man bearing stabbed wounds and slashed ear was found along the road in Sitio San Jose, Barangay Calape, Daanbantayan town last Friday evening.

Verancio Dejito Rosello, 70, a farm worker, resident of Sitio Sta. Lucia of said barangay was found lying on the roadside by Elsa Arcenal, a tuba (coconut wine) seller.

According to Arcenal, she found the victim’s body bathed in blood on the dark portion of the area prompting her to call for police assistance.

Responding police officers said Rosello’s left ear was slashed off and he bore stabbed wounds on the back.

The victim’s wife, Mercedes, alleged that prior to the incident, her husband had asked permission to watch a “tigbakay” (cockfight).

She believed that when her husband was already on his way home and while he was walking on the dark portion of the area, the perpetrator waylaid and attacked him.

Mercedes also admitted that her husband was a drunkard but she didn’t notice that he had enemies. — Lesley Caminade of Banat News/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
