Ten Food Indulgence Snares

- Ruth Mercado -

CEBU, Philippines - Satan is excited when you are ensnared into his indulgence — the indulgence of food. Poison can be disguised when mixed with wholesome food but it does not change the nature of poison. Each day people poison themselves unnecessarily with what they eat and how they eat because they willingly trap themselves into Satan’s snares in food indulgence. The following are food indulgence snares  — which although are not poison — have the same effect of poison because it can harm a person’s well-being.

Snare #1: Eat all you can.

For a fixed amount, people believe they can eat to their heart’s content. The gimmick of eat-all-you-can is another way of saying, eat all the cholesterol that you can. Eat all the food that your body can no longer digest. Eat-all-you-can means you couldn’t care less if your heart is trapped in fat, clogged arteries and for a few hundred pesos for an eat-all-you-can meal, you end up with a thousand pesos in hospital bills and medication. Eat-all-you-can is never really eating all you can because the human body has limits to what it can contain. Somewhere between digging into your dish and scooping this to your mouth, your brain tells you to stop putting all that food in. Eat-all-you-can is a nice way for restaurant and food chain owners to get all the profit margins they can, but the subliminal message of indulgence is unhealthy and is potentially harmful. While you still can, get out of the trap into eating what you really cannot.

Snare #2: Free soft drinks.

Packaged in a nice way called value meal, many fastfood chains lure people to their value meals with claims that soft drinks is free. Free soft drinks forces you to gobble up sugar and makes you addicted to sugar. Before you know it, you’re trapped.

Too much sugar makes you potentially prone to diabetes and other diseases. Sugar can suppress the immune system, contributes to defense reduction against bacterial infection, loss of tissue elasticity and function, that is, the more sugar you eat the more elasticity and function you lose. Sugar can weaken your eyesight, cause pre-mature aging, cause tooth decay and contributes to obesity. Sugar can cause migrane, headaches and depression. These are just some of the ruinous effects of sugar that comes free with your value meal with softdrinks. The real value of value meals may turn out to be a high price to pay for your health.

Snare #3: Upsize.

In fast food chains polite and courteous food attendants would often ask if you want to upsize your fries, your drinks or your float for 10, 20 or 25 pesos. Careful, don’t be deceived by those smiles, these can be sinister to your health. Upsizing forces you to eat more of what you don’t need. For instance, more fries means eating more salt, more oil, more carbohydrates just as upsizing float and soft drinks holds you captive into sugar addiction.

Snare #4: Food in toys, Tumbler in doughnuts

When fastfood chains can’t trap adults into a value meal, they trap the children. Fastfood chains are fond of including toys in their value meals so you are conned to buy the entire meal including softdrinks and fries that are high in sugar and sodium. These come-ons use toys to trap you into poison. It is not just value meals, even doughnuts use the same toys-for-value scheme only that it is not toys. They offer tumblers, umbrellas, and anything else that you don’t necessarily need but drives you to compulsive spending of buying a whole box and thus forces you to eat more sugar.

Snare #5: Bottomless Ice Tea

The sugar poison is just as heavy in bottomless ice tea. Notice that big pizza parlor chains and bar and restaurants often offer bottomless ice tea. This is because there is nothing in ice tea but water and sugar, mostly sugar. Because sugar is a sticky substance, particles stick to the cells when left in the bloodstream. The more bottomless ice tea you consume, the more wrinkles you will get, experience a lack of mobility, dry brittle nails and other health problems. Drinking so much ice tea can also ruin your voice. Satan isn’t always the ‘Thriller’ that we see in Michael Jackson videos. Satan is just standing right beside you when you order your pan pizza with bottomless ice tea.

Snare #6: Fun in intoxicating drinks.

Whether its Bora or Tandua, these end up with the same suffix — ay. These intoxicating drinks are advertised as fun. To commit sin in sexual promiscuity is acceptable as men and women strip in ads air on primetime televison. In the Bora ad, women in modest business suits strip to their undies, gyrating near naked, as they intoxicated at the beach. It is like saying even women executives can lose their morals when under the influence of strong drinks. The other ad shows men flying out of the window only to land in a waiting jeep where women welcome them with ready arms. Is this ad saying that men or people plunge to their deaths or plunge to sin when drinking alcohol? It used to be that women are sex objects when drinking alcohol, but nowadays Satan so powerfully used advertisers to make it highly acceptable for women to engage in intoxicated drinks and group sex.

Snare #7: The road is always rocky in ice cream.

To call an ice cream ‘indulgence’ is like a prostitute offering sex in daytime. Just to give a strong endorsement on obesity and indulgence, this ice cream company paid a fat sum to a megastar who scoops ice cream to her mouth with closed eyes. How long must people be freed from the trap that ice cream is fattening? Must people wait for them to have massive cardiac arrests before they realize that too much ice cream can cause bad cholesterol to trap the heart? How long must people be persuaded that the megastar endorsing the ice cream is now humbled in embarrassing shows that makes her the biggest loser?

Snare #8: Just because there is change.

A fastfood chain advertises their meals as better-for-you because you can still have a few pesos or centavos in change. The problem is that these meals are so high on fat, sodium and other food extenders and food enhancers that even if this is advertised as value for money, it comprises on nutrition.

Snare #9: Roller coaster way of eating

In this ad of promoting fun in a cereal-based sildren to indulge in snacks only to make fun of these by throwing these in the air.

Snare #10: Vetsin mixed in magic

No matter how you call it, Monosodium glutamate or vetsin by any name is still vetsin. Because of the many adverse effects of vetsin, food manufacturers have packaged it with a different name. You cannot change the nature of poison even if you give it a magical name. So you cannot change the adverse effects of vetsin. Over the years, reports of adverse reactions to food containing vetsin include headache, sweating, chest pain, nausea and weakness. No amount of magic will work when your body weakens owing to excessive consumption of food additives.
