“Gugma ni Alvarado” Forever Lives On

- Sarinah Soliano -

As man goes on with his daily living, whether in school or at work, art is always involved. Be it dancing, singing or just merely reciting, there is art imbued in these activities. Art is so broad that one will have to fully explore and value its magnificence, grandeur and entirety.

Take it from the man who has garnered several awards for his masterpieces, has conquered both the Philippines and Asia for his indefatigable craft and has put passion in his work for the love of his people: Nunelucio Alvarado.

With the theme “Gugma ni Alvarado,” his 3rd exhibit in Maribago Bluewater Gallery opened last Dec. 19, 2007. The gallery showcases 26 paintings superbly done through watercolor and oil. His paintings are rich in color which evidently interprets the feelings of warmth and affection. Nunelucio carries on with his exhibit capturing the things of vital importance to human life despite the new and advanced technology in this modern world.

Born in the turbulent seventies, Nunelucio was inspired to create his craft because of the struggle and cry of the working class in his community. Immersing in the lives of the sakadas (migrant workers or peasants in the sugarcane fields), fisherfolk and vendors alike, he was given a wider view of their conditions and gained better understanding of their needs.

Now his love of the arts speaks and represents the voiceless majority- the silent victims of oppression and inequality. The endeavor of his people turned out to be the raw materials for his expertise. He strives to illustrate the true circumstances of the society and expose its anomalies.

Like any other artists, he hopes to have more exhibits to come. According to him, it’s nice to have shows anywhere because you can entertain people and share a part of your culture to them.

Nunelucio is regarded as one of the most prominent artists in the Philippines today for attaining several acclaims. Nunelucio shares that if one is interested in delving into the world of art, he has to keep on working. His words “no retreat, no surrender” is an advice to all that art is a struggle and a challenge.

He inexhaustibly mirror our society’s ever changing landscape through his paintings and drawings. Dedicating his achievements to the Filipino artists, Nunelucio tells that “Art is a product of the creative mind. You can build art wherever you go.”
