TFF attends to 100 kids in Adopt an Angel project

ASPACEINSPACE - Maria Eleanor E. Valeros -
The FREEMAN Foundation carried out the second to the last of the special projects lined up for last year, the Adopt an Angel Project (Year 2) with the theme, "Sharing everything we own - our heart, our life, our hope, our vision" last December 18. Carols for the poor, wherein the foundation volunteers sang Christmas carols to indigents and gave them goodies instead of them receiving coins, capped the special projects for 2006.

With the 16 volunteers of the foundation core group to take care of a hundred children-recipients of said program, the kids were taken aboard a Kaohsiung bus from designated pick-up points all over the metropolis to the Cebu Parklane International Hotel near the Ayala Business District.

Unlike in 2005, wherein there were only around 48 recipients, the number doubled because of the efforts of the foundation to cater to a bigger crowd of indigent kids. The other year, we were in charge of three kids each, picked from various depressed areas of the metro. This time, most of the indigent children were from the St. Arnold Janssen Parish in Alumnos, barangay Mambaling escorted by social worker Teofila "Ma'm Teofy" Sacmar.

Also, the foundation came up with the sale of big and small lanterns and angels to raise funds. Big lanterns were up for P100 each, the small ones were sold for P75 each, while the angels made of abaca were up for P50 each. Aside from sales at the different departments here in our office, representatives were able to sell at the Bureau of Customs, and other private and government offices. All items bore the patrons' names and were put up onto the department's Christmas trees. Also, we got into a tie-up with The Parklane. Through Mr. Alan Ting, the vice president for sales and marketing and Ms. Anna Ng, business development officer, the hotel helped sell Christmas lanterns priced at P100 each to raise more funds for the project. The lanterns also bore donors' names and were put up at the hotel's 13-foot Christmas tree at the lobby.

Aside from selling Christmas symbols/items, the foundation also embarked on "Christmas with the Angels: Carols and Flavors for a Cause". At Manny's Resto, part of the proceeds of their food plates at P1,000 went to the foundation. The activity was topped with a Christmas Carol Competition wherein the University of the Visayas Chorale emerged as grand champion.

The foundation gave the children-recipients their early morning meals of rice, sunny-side-up and hotdog-on-stick at The FREEMAN administration building at around 6 am of December 18. This was after they were grouped into four teams - Team Blue, Yellow, Green and Red. Each child donned a shirt according to his or her team's color, white short pants, and a visor that indicated the Christmas symbol that goes along with the team color, such as Santa Claus, Reindeer, Snowman and Gingerbread Man.

At The Parklane, the children lined up for souvenir photographs at the giant Christmas tree and were ushered thereafter to the Victoria Hall at the second floor. There, the kids played games and presented a play on the Nativity of the Christ as trained by Ma'm Teofy. Then they took their lunch of fried chicken and french bread, spaghetti and juice. One child blurted out to his facilitator, "karon pa ko kakaon gyud og fried chicken, ma'm".

Another child preferred to take home his packed lunch. When asked by the facilitator, he replied: "Patilawon nako akong mama og mga manghod ani, sir!" This reply from a meek heart sent the facilitator teary eyed as he directed the child to eat his share, and gave him another packed meal for him to take home.

After the core group sang a birthday song for foundation administrator Dr. Remedios Bacasmas' golden birthday anniversary, a kid from Team Blue, identified as Santiago, raised his hand and told everyone it was also his birthday. As soon as the core group finished serenading him with another round of the happy birthday song, he was asked for his wish.

"Gusto lang ko'g naa ko'y cake," Santiago grinned. Minutes later, Ms. Anna Ng brought in the wish with three candles stuck onto it for Santiago to puff out.

The highlight of the program was a magic show with Cebu's Prince of Magic, Mr. Vergel Racho, of Party Central. Then, the kids went home with their Christmas gifts and goodies for Noche Buena.

Because of the growing number of donors and sponsors, the foundation was able to sustain the program last year. The project in its second year was rated big success because of your generosity. Please be there again with us as we move on to more meaningful projects that would surely touch more lives in 2007.

Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year, everyone!
