Coco husk demand on the rise

Ehda M. Dagooc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Coconut farmers will expect added income as demand for coco husk rises in both local and overseas markets.

Coco coir, a product made out of coco husk has now gained traction in terms of demand not only for home furnishing like upholstery and decor products, but also for road, irrigation and other infrastructure projects.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-7) regional director Asteria Caberte said the development of coco coir production in the region specifically in Negros Oriental is one of the six industry priorities being given extra attention.

Coir, or coconut fiber, is a natural fiber extracted from the husk of coconut and used in products such as floor mats, doormats, brushes and mattresses. Coir is the fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut.

Aside from coco coir, Caberte also mentioned the potential livelihood for rubber farmers in particularly in Bayawan City in Negros Oriental.

Caberte said DTI-7 will intensify its connection with the coco farmers and provide them with technology and know-how in capitalizing on the coconut by-product that usually goes to waste.
