‘Pressure is on’for tourism stakeholders

Ehda M. Dagooc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Tourism stakeholders in Cebu are called to commit in sustaining the island-province's tourism advantage by adhering to responsible tourism business practices and sustaining Cebu's position as one of the world's favorite island destinations in the world.

Tourism leader, and the chairman of this year's Cebu Business Month (CBM 2018) Tourism Innovation Summit, Edwin Ortiz made this call in the midst of high tourism prospects in the province, as well as threat to environmental adherence.

"The pressure is on," said Ortiz reflecting on Boracay's story in which Cebu is also reportedly on the radar of environmental examination and monitoring of authorities.

While stakeholders are confident that Cebu is environmentally conscious, Ortiz said the pressure is more felt in sustaining its positioning as the second best island in the world.

Conde Nast Traveler has placed Cebu, along with Boracay and Palawan, as the top three best islands in the world on their Readers' Choice Awards 2017.

According to Conde Nast Traveler, Cebu is "famous for its beaches on the mainland as well as across many of the surrounding islands," adding that "to get a true taste of island life," tourists should "head off the grid on the Camotes islands.

This along with the opening of the world-class international airport or MCIA Terminal 2, is putting pressure on stakeholders in meeting the high expectation of the world market, and take advantage of the dynamism.

Ortiz also mentioned the shortage of accommodation facilities in countryside destinations like Moalboal, in which the business sector can also assist.

In collaboration of the business sector like the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry and local government units (LGUs) Cebu will be able to meet the challenges head on, and milk on the swirling opportunities of tourism, which is expected to continue for long term. (FREEMAN)
