It’s not just another New Year!

BUSINESS AFTER BUSINESS - Romelinda Cruz Garces - The Freeman

It’s not just another new year!  This year will never come back.  So it is the only year of this type!

The New Year has brought with it new hope.  As we sit back in our offices as work or do our usual enterprise, we try as much to bring to perspective our approach to this new page.

The year that past was filled with so many things to do that even in the last stretch, we wanted to hold on to the calendar to be able to cope with our unfinished activities or targets.

As we tried to reach our quota, or meet our projections, we ended up being so focused on what we had to do and forgot why we were doing them.

Do we work simply for the money?  Are we striving for fame or promotion?  Are our energies geared towards what is more meaningful and worthy of our time?

Annually, we add a step to our age and as a dear friend of mine would unflinchingly and tirelessly ask me each year, “What are you doing all these for?  Why the rush and why the stress?”

I would just shove his comments aside and go on prodding.  Pursuing what I thought were goals that I had to meet every day until they no longer added spring to my walk.

The constant churning got me to attend parties that I had to paste a smile on my face on.  Perhaps that is why when I meet other people in a gathering, and linger to talk with them, I try as much as possible to look into their eyes and see if they are  “with me” as we speak.

Sometimes, I see that their thoughts are elsewhere.  Another party that they are compelled by function to attend or a nagging chore that they have to extend hours for do accomplish. Perhaps eyes are not encouraging as well as my mind lingers and gets stuck somewhere.

The excitement of events has lost their verve as we pursue too many things for us to enjoy the real meaning of life.  I have experienced the truth of being bone-weary after long hours of poring over targets that increase every year.  I still have not met a job that does not require this and I guess it is how we approach things that would help us change perspective.

Still the spirit prods me to this time make a choice of finding the real purpose of the things we do and taking things one step at a time.  Truly exerting effort to  seek what has more impact, more meaning, more soul.

So as we plan for another year, let us make our objectives truly reachable without breaking our backs, our hearts or our spirits.

Happy New Year everyone!
