BSP faces tightening decision amid oil-driven inflation risks

From AB Capital's The Opening Bell: Three Moves

Event

A majority of economists (11 out of 19) expect the BSP to raise policy rates by 25 bps to 4.5% at the April 23 meeting, its first hike in over two years, as inflation reached 4.1% in March and risks of second-round effects continue to build.

View

In our view, the decision reflects a shift toward preemptive tightening to anchor inflation expectations and support the peso. However, the policy trade-off remains tight, as inflation is largely supply-driven while growth momentum is already softening amid external and domestic headwinds. Our base case is for a 50% probability of a 25bps rate hike this week.

Catalyst

Key sensitivities include oil prices, peso stability, and inflation expectations. If Brent remains elevated and inflation breaches 5%, we think the BSP could deliver a one-off hike followed by a pause. Faster oil normalization could reopen the path toward easing later this year.

Action

We think positioning should reflect a higher-for-longer rate environment near term. Banks may benefit from margin support but face slower loan growth. Remain cautious on rate-sensitive sectors, while monitoring currency trends and inflation expectations as key signals for policy direction.
