Early credit stress signals emerge beneath stable defaults

From AB Capital's The Opening Bell: Three Moves

Event

Lenders are seeing early signs of borrower stress despite stable default rates, with Advance.AI flagging shifts toward minimum payments, rising loan stacking, and a 10-20% increase in small-ticket borrowing demand. Stress is expected to surface more clearly within 60 to 90 days post-shock.

View

In our view, these behavioral changes are consistent with early-cycle credit deterioration driven by oil-led inflation. Households are adjusting cash flows rather than defaulting, suggesting pressure is building gradually. The risk is a delayed but broader impact on asset quality if elevated costs persist.

Catalyst

Key sensitivities include fuel prices, wage growth, and inflation persistence. If oil remains elevated and real incomes weaken, we think delinquency rates could rise beyond seasonal norms within two to three quarters. Stabilizing prices would likely contain stress within vulnerable borrower segments.

Action

We think banks and lenders should remain proactive on credit monitoring and segmentation. Favor institutions with strong underwriting discipline and diversified portfolios. Monitor leading indicators such as payment behavior and loan stacking closely, as these will likely precede any meaningful deterioration in reported asset quality.
