Isuzu works on new prototypes for PUV modernization plan
MANILA, Philippines — Isuzu Philippines Corp. (IPC) is working on new prototype vehicle models for the government’s public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program.
IPC president Hajime Koso told reporters the firm would submit prototypes for 23-seater and 25-seater PUVs for the modernization program.
The models will be showcased at an event supporting the PUV modernization program on Oct. 12 at the Philippine Trade Training Center, according to IPC head of sales division Joseph Bautista.
Koso said IPC’s prototype model would be competing against other vehicle manufacturers participating under the PUV modernization program.
Under the modernization program, the government aims to modernize 220,000 public utility jeepneys across the country as part of efforts to provide a safer transport system for commuters while mitigating the effects of climate change.
Asked how many units of the new model is targeted to be produced, Koso said it depends on the decision of government as it is part of the PUV program
“Not our decision. This is a competition. Isuzu and many other car manufacturers,” Koso said.
Bautista emphasized IPC would only be the platform provider of the PUV model and not the body builder.
While IPC would compete against other platform providers, Koso said the company’s advantage against its competitors is that its parts are manufactured in the Philippines.
“It will support the local manufacturing industry,” Bautista added.
Asked how much one unit of the PUV would cost, Bautista said the firm would still have to consider mass production factors, as it is still in the prototype stage.
“We’re still working on the specifications. Until we put it on exhibit and get some comments from government, we’re still to do some calculations,” Bautista said.
IPC’s production capacity currently stands at 15,000 units a year. Koso said the company is looking at doubling this to 30,000 units, half of which “can be” allotted for PUV unit production.
Moreover, Koso expressed that the company has increased its sales target for this year to more than 30,000 unit sales, three times its sales volume five years ago.
“Our mu-X model sold the highest number of units here in the Philippines compared to any other country in the world. Our trucks hold the No. 1 position in total truck sales for 17 consecutive years; and in 2016, our total truck sales reached more than 6,000 units, more than triple our sales in the past years,” Koso said.
