Younger mart eyed for new Beetle

MANILA, Philippines - The country’s official distributor of Volkswagen vehicles is looking to connect with the younger generation following the introduction of the new iconic Beetle.

“Our target market are those who want to look at a fun alternative (vehicle). It really is the spirit of fun. We hope we will be able to attract many of the younger generation now because many of our parents were part of the old Beetle. We want to rekindle that with the younger generation,” Automobile Central Enterprise, Inc. (ACEI) president John Philip Orbeta told reporters at the launch of the third generation Beetle.

He noted that the firm has so far received 20 pre-orders for the new vehicle model.

Deliveries for the Beetle, which would be imported from Mexico, are expected to start in two months.

The new Beetle is available in two variants: the 1.2 TSI which retails for P1.590 million and the 1.4 TSI which costs P1.790 million to P1.840 million.

ACEI has yet to set a sales target for the Beetle and other vehicle models, citing the need to look at the markets’ reception of the products first.

“We’re doing market testing...We hope to hit a few hundreds (in sales) this year,” Orbeta said.

Orders for the Beetle along with other Volkswagen vehicle models such as the Jetta, Polo Notch, Touran, Tiguan and Touareg could be made at ACEI’s dealership located in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

Orbeta said the company plans to open two more dealerships before the end of the year, with one located in Alabang and the other in Quezon City.

ACEI opened its first Volkswagen dealership last year amid the growing market for vehicles in the country.

ACEI is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Ayala Corp.

Aside from ACEI, the Ayala Group through Ayala Automotive Holdings Corp. has interests in Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. and Isuzu Philippines Corp.
