DHL reports improvement in carbon efficiency
MANILA, Philippines - DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, announced that its Philippines Express division achieved a remarkable 14.3 percent improvement in CO2 efficiency1 in 2010, compared to 2009. DHL Express Philippines (DHL PH) managed to attain the double-digit improvement despite seeing a robust volume growth in the past year.
It is noted that the air pollution levels in Metro Manila and other cities exceeded national air quality standards and could pose potential serious economic burden on society. Climate changes could also impact Philippines’ biodiversity and its surrounding environment. DHL in the Philippines is doing its part to combat climate change by operating in a more carbon-efficient manner, focusing on three key areas that will help to improve its overall carbon efficiency – fleets, buildings and networks.
Real estate and ground operations currently represent 55 percent and 45 percent, respectively of DHL PH’s total carbon emissions. Carbon footprint consumption in these two sectors are closely monitored and abatement programs such as refleeting and facilities management have been implemented to help improve the company’s carbon efficiency.
‘The baby steps we are taking to improve our carbon efficiency in Philippines have paid off, and we are proud to say that we are seeing encouraging results through our efforts, evident through the double-digit improvement achieved. This has spurred us to continue seeking and examining ways to reduce energy consumption to further reduce our carbon footprint,” commented Duncan Gates, country manager, DHL Express Philippines.
1 Includes Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Scope 1, 2 & 3 CO2 emissions on the ground, but excludes all aviation CO2 emissions.
