A face to fall for

Regina Belmonte - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - We’ll come right out with it: The bold fall/winter lip is old. It doesn’t matter if it’s a bright cherry red this year, or if it’s all about that rich matte texture, or if we’re delving into the deep, dark burgundy that only the edgiest, the beauty editors, and the Goths will wear. It’s predictable, practically clockwork, and yet everyone hails its annual return like it hasn’t been done before. (Whatever the shade or shine, you know it has.)

Of course, we would never begrudge you your red lip if it’s really your thing, but why not move the focus up a few inches this year? We’re all about eyes — these looks are statement-making but (mostly) subtle, and great to wear to dinner or drinks because your color definitely won’t be sticking to your utensils or your champagne flute.

Blue my mind

Inky black shadow and liner blended on the upper lid with a bright slash of blue on the lower lash line — if you can’t do without bold color, then blue is the bold color you should be looking for. Vibrant, but not nearly so avant-garde that you can’t wear it with pretty much anything, this look off the Giles runway is one of makeup artist Jigs Mayuga’s picks for the season. Channel your inner Cara Delevingne and pair it with bold brows and cool girl hair.

Say it with silver

The standard black smoky eye is a staple look in every girl’s going-out-glam arsenal. Tried, tested, true, and perfect for that come-hither stare we all love to employ when we’re on the prowl. Makeup artist Omar Ermita is all about the metallic, and he suggests that you switch it up just a little bit by giving your charcoal smoky eye some shine and dimension with a layer of silver shadow. Wear with a nude lip — or no lipstick at all — like they did at Donna Karan. The touch of silver in the inner corners brightens up your eyes.

That sixties show

Nothing says “flirt with me” like full, lush lashes. Gleaming skin, softly defined eyes in buff, neutral shades, a strip of crisp black liner along your lashline, and piles and piles of lashes are the look to lust after — over the top without being over the top. Match them with defined brows and a deep nude lip topped with gloss for that modern day retro glam vibe in the style of Versace.

The gold standard

Like red lips, metallics are another season staple. Unlike red lips, however, not many venture to wear metallics on places that aren’t their fingertips. Don’t do that. A wash of gold and copper on your lids — a la Alexander McQueen — gives you a subtle but ethereal look. It’s especially gorgeous on those with warmer skin tones. (Yes, morenas, I am talking to you.)
