Temporary fix

Maine Manalansan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Some things are best kept secret: your 2 a.m. Twitter drafts, browsing history, and your dating escapades. For some people, being in a relationship doesn’t always mean albums upon albums of beach getaways and Hong Kong trips. Sometimes, a few hours in a room are enough to keep a relationship alive.

Motels are ironic; people experience a sense of permanence in an otherwise temporary relationship. For a few hours, you get to imagine a life where only two people exist. The ugly paint job, cracked tiles and hard bed definitely doesn’t make a perfect living experience, but it’s a small price to pay for a private moment.

Dial Zero: Cheap Motel Stories explores the short-lived intimacy of motel rooms and the relationship of people who inhabit it. It features the works of Tokwa Peñaflorida, Kay Aranzanso and Soleil Ignacio. If you have seen their sketches online (check #dialZero in their personal accounts), you’ll know that you’re in for a very intimate art show. They explore perspectives that are often kept hidden in secluded spaces and expose their #feels in a way that even those who haven’t experienced it can understand.

Through their paintings, we take a peek into a world that exists only through their eyes. It’s a secret that they didn’t mind sharing, and one we definitely don’t mind keeping.

Dial Zero: Cheap Motel Stories open on May 14 at NOVA Gallery, Makati City.
