Get inspired at Graphika Manila

MANILA, Philippines - Graphika Manila is celebrating its 10th year of bringing together the best minds to inspire and celebrate the best in design. Today and tomorrow at the SMX Convention Center in SM Mall of Asia, a mix of local and foreign talent shall preach the power of creativity.

On the local front, there’s Leeroy New, whose dress was worn by Lady Gaga; Nick Automatic’s Nicolo Nimor, who was called one of the 20 best young designers by BluPrint magazine; shirt designer AJ Dimarucot, whose shirts have been worn by Panic at the Disco, Alicia Keys and Michael Jackson; and Sid Maderazo of 88 Storey Films, one of the country’s best production houses.

From abroad, there’s Benson Shum, an animator from Disney Animation; Anton & Irene, a digital design duo who has done work for Google, Sony, Porsche and Balenciaga; Seb Lester, a calligrapher who has created typefaces for H&M, NASA, Apple and The New York Times; Enric Godes of Vasava, a global agency that started in a former parking garage in Barcelona; Joshua Davis, who helped design IBM’s Watson, which played as a contestant on the quiz show Jeopardy; Pomme Chan, an illustrator whose works have appeared in MTV, Volkswagen, Adidas and Nike ads; Machineast, which orchestrated Graphika Manila 2015’s branding and intro; and Chris Lee of The Asylum, a top branding specialist. Fair warning: attending the conference will give you an overdose of inspiration.

WatchTycho

Tycho, or Scott Hansen, has made a name for himself with what Pitchfork calls “nostalgia, 1970s-inspired imagery, a heavy sense of tranquility and faraway longing, all tied together with a pretty sleek modernity.” On Tuesday, Tycho will be performing at the Solaire Theater to promote his new album “Awake,” which retains his previous album’s electronic sound, but with a stronger and more mature presence. He also started working with a three-piece band, in his effort to balance performing live with instruments with the sheen of electronica. Ambient music is meant to be unobtrusive, but with the addition of drums and guitars, you’re bound to sit up, notice, and dance along.

Discover emotional minefields at ‘Time Stands Still’

A local adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway play written by Donald Margulies, Time Stands Still revolves around Sarah, a photojournalist from Iraq who returns to Brooklyn with her boyfriend James after being injured by a bomb. As the couple settle in their quiet life, they realize that urban domesticity can be as fraught as a war. The show is being mounted by Red Turnip Theater, whose productions are elegant and thought-provoking. Directed by Rem Zamora, and starring Nonie Buencamino, Ana Abad Santos, Nor Domingo and Giannina Ocampo, Time Stands Still, which will be staged at Whitespace (Pasong Tamo, Makati), is described by Zamora as “powerful because it’s so quiet.” Watch with your friends, unless you want a grilling from your partner if your relationship is like that. Time Stands Still will be staged until March 8.
