Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

Who to meet: Xyza Cruz Bacani

MANILA, Philippines - You’ve probably heard of Xyza Cruz Bacani by now, the Filipina domestic helper in Hong Kong whose black and white photographs have been featured in The New York Times and Vogue Italia. The Times have called her work “dramatic, kinetic, and serene,” and one look at her photos will prove that this girl has an eye like no other. Bacani is in the country to do a series of talks, and today will be her first. Fujifilm has set up a sort of homecoming and exhibit for the celebrated photographer at Relik in BGC, where she will talk about her work as a street photographer. If you own a Fujifilm X camera, that will serve as your ticket. The event has added 20 more slots to accommodate a total of 60 participants. Who knows? You might even be featured in The New York Times.

What to watch onstage: ‘Dani Girl’

In a generation that is increasingly becoming attuned to theater, The Sandbox Collective aims to shake up the scene with its presence. You’re probably thinking, “Do we really need another theater company?” Well, if said theater company is dedicated to promoting new, groundbreaking and cutting-edge work, then yes, we do need another theater company. For their first production, they will stage a local adaptation of Dani Girl, a musical described as “good for the soul.” It’s an off-Broadway musical about Dani, a nine-year-old girl who’s refusing to lose the battle to leukemia, and goes on an imaginary journey with her best friend Marty, her guardian angel Raph, and her teddy bear Mr. Fritz to claim her hair and answer the question, “Why is cancer?” It seems to be a heartwarming production, but when you consider that Leeroy New is creating additional set design, you know you’re in for a mind-altering trip. Dani Girl will be portrayed by Rebecca Coates and Mitzie Lao, and they will be joined by Lorenz Martinez, Reb Atadero, Sheila Valderrama, Pamela Imperial, and Luigi Quesada. Find out why everyone’s excited to see Dani Girl’s Asian premiere. The show will run from July 11 to 27 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City. Tickets are available on Ticketworld.
