BOSS Ironman to focus on road safety in 2018

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Organizers of the BOSS Ironman Motorcycle Challenge XIII will implement changes on the format to ensure that the riders and drivers comply with road safety measures, including traffic rules and speed limit, when it is held on Jan. 13, 2018.

Five hundred to 700 riders and car drivers are expected to join the fun, adventure event that will take off from Clark, Pampanga and complete the 1,200kms of the Northern Luzon Loop also held to promote local tourism and road safety.

With road safety as primordial concern, the Department of Tourism and the Philippine National Police have thrown their support to the BOSS Ironman, one of the longest riding and driving endurance events in the country, according to Lito Flores, chairman of the BOSS Ironman Challenge organizing committee.

BOSS stands for BMW Owners Society of Saferiders, Inc.

The event is backed by local government officials from 10 provinces which are part of the route. These include Pampanga, Bataan, Zambales, Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Cagayan, Isabela and Nueva Ecija.

Topping the list of format revisions is for each of the participants or teams to strictly observe the speed limit in all areas. They are required to engage in fun activities like taking “groufies” in designated checkpoints to be posted on BOSS Ironman Facebook page in real time.

Participants also get free hydration drinks, local delicacies, back massage, and enjoy short cultural presentations prepared by local government units.

While the 24-hour deadline for the participants to complete the loop remains, marshals will be fielded along the route to spot those who will disregard traffic laws. Also, the North Luzon Express (NLEx) supports the BOSS Ironman by installing new speed radars which can detect over-speeding vehicles even during night time. Special toll booths for Ironman participants will be designated by authorities.

Participants are also not allowed to come up with news and photo releases, claiming they’re the top finishers of the endurance run. Violators will be deprived of their Ironman Finisher certification.

The event is open to all motorcycle brands with engine displacement from 400cc and above and four-wheeled vehicles certified as road worthy.
