Gilas starts training for FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine men’s national basketball team on Friday night has begun its preparations for the Asian qualifiers of the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Leading the crop are longtime Gilas Pilipinas members Gabe Norwood, Japeth Aguilar, June Mar Fajardo and Jayson Castro.
Also in attendance at the Meralco Gym in Ortigas were Calvin Abueva, Raymond Almazan, Troy Rosario. Former cadet pool members Mac Belo, Carl Bryan Cruz, Jio Jalalon, Allein Maliksi, Matthew Wright and RR Pogoy were likewise present.
Gilas coach Chot Reyes were with deputies Jong Uichico, Josh Reyes, Jimmy Alapag and Ryan Betia. They began training around 8:30 p.m.
The Philippines are classified under Group B with powerhouse Australia, Japan and Chinese-Taipei.
Gilas will kick off its bid to qualify for the global skirmish on a road game against the Japanese on November 24. The Filipinos will then play the Taiwanese at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum on November 27.
