Buncio sisters dominate superbikes tilt

Buncio sisters Jacq (fourth from left) and Des (second from left), with sponsor World Traveller, emerge champion and runner-up in their respective divisions.

MANILA, Philippines — There is a Sister Act making waves and turning heads in the local superbikes’ scene.

Jacq and Des Buncio, sisters of the late superbikes great Maico Buncio, recently emerged as champion and runner-up in their respective categories in the 2017 Pirelli Philippine Superbike Championship recently at the Clark International Speedway.

With the Heavyweight B Category already in the bag even before she mounted her 600cc Yamaha R-6, 17-year-old Jacq rode at her own pace to formally crown herself overall champion of the category – an outstanding feat in itself considering her youth and the male-dominated field using 1000cc-and-above machines.

She garnered 10 and 13 points during Races 1 and 2, respectively, to accumulate a six-leg total of 222 points for a huge 54-point margin over second-running Andrey Blinov (162) and a 56-point edge over third-ranked Edding Norbidieri.

On the other hand, Jacq’s older sister Des secured the runner-up feat in the Lightweight A category by finishing with a six-round total of 186 points behind overall champi on Geronimo David. Jacq was overall champion of the Lightweight A division last season.

“The Quezon City government under the office of the Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte and QCAA (Quezon City Athletic Association) chairman James Sy and Primer Group of Companies have been very supportive in our campaign,” said Des Buncio. “We wouldn’t have made it without their backing.”

The Buncios are also supported by World Traveller Luggage Bags.

“We’re so happy that we have a strong and sturdy luggage bags from World Traveller to protect our complete racing gears that fit perfectly inside including our spare apparels,” said Des.

Jacq’s Heavyweight B campaign this year took off on a blazing start as she swept all six races of the series’ first three rounds at the Batangas Racing Circuit, Clark International Speedway and back again at the BRC, clinching a perfect score of 150 points. It was a tactical ride the rest of the way for the pretty superbikes star en route to the overall crown.

Des, on the other hand, also began her season on a high note as she placed second to David in the first two races of the series at the BRC, before consistently finishing in the podium the rest of the way.
