Human trafficking victims down in 2016
Records showed there were 1,168 victims of trafficking rescued in 243 police operations last year, compared to 1,505 persons rescued in 2015.
MANILA, Philippines — The number of victims of human trafficking dropped by 22.39 percent in 2016, the Philippine National Police Women and Children Protection Center (PNP-WCPC) said yesterday.
Records showed there were 1,168 victims of trafficking rescued in 243 police operations last year, compared to 1,505 persons rescued in 2015.
There were also fewer suspects arrested last year, from 292 in 2015 to 208 the following year, or a decrease of 28.76 percent.
From January to August this year, 560 victims were rescued and 157 suspects have been arrested in 172 law enforcement operations across the country.
Senior Supt. Villamor Tuliao, who heads the WCPC Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division, said people involved in human trafficking have become cautious with their activities.
“They are now careful because of our intensified operations,” Tuliao said.
