Abra solon wants soldiers to get bounty on Hapilon, Maute

Government troops head for a continuing military operation against Muslim militants who lay siege in Marawi city Friday, May 26, 2017 at Bal-oi township, Lanao del Norte province in southern Philippines. BAGUIO CITY — Abra Rep. Joseph Sto. Niño Bernos said soldiers who killed Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute should also be entitled to the bounties on the two terrorist leaders.

“It is only proper that our soldiers also become entitled to the bounties for these terrorists. After all, it was them who put their lives on the line to track and neutralize Hapilon and Maute,” Bernos said.

The US government placed a $5 million bounty for Hapilon while the Philippine government has a reward of P10 million for Hapilon and P5 million for Maute for those who could inform of their whereabouts.

Bernos who serves as the vice chairperson of the House Committee on Public Order and Safety also expressed relief over the death of the two leaders behind the over four months-long Marawi siege that resulted in the displacement of thousands.

“I also cannot stress how unforgivable is the destruction they had caused to the economy and local culture of Marawi City, which makes the efforts to rebuild the city an utmost consideration for this administration,” he said.

The Abra lawmaker also said soldiers have a role to play in the rehabilitation of Marawi.
