New MRT coaches to be launched before April

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is expecting to launch the new light rail vehicles (LRV) of the Metro Rail Transit by April.

The new coaches were assembled over the weekend. The dynamic testing of LRV #2 and the start of static testing of LRV #3 and #4 is expected by the end of February.

The DOTC added that the start of dynamic testing of LRV #3 and #4 will be finished by early March. The coaches will undergo a test run of 1,000 kilometers.

Meanwhile, the completion of the 5,000-kilometer test run of LRV #2 is targeted to be completed by the end of March.

Two new MRT coaches arrived in Manila last week. The new coaches are part of the 48 LRVs acquired by the DOTC for the MRT3 capacity expansion project.

The project seeks to increase the capacity of the MRT to over 800,000 daily passengers.

The agency is confident that there will be a 67-percent increase in capacity once the delivery of four new coaches from March until January 2017 is completed.
