Lulu Tan Gan is still hip at 60
Super hip and stylish designer Lulu Tan Gan turned into a seniorella but forgot to celebrate her birthday due to a hectic schedule. Not only is she at the top of the fashion heap with her clothing line and retail store in Greenbelt 5, as well as the chairperson of the Fashion Design and Merchandising Program at De La Salle’s School of Design and Arts, this workaholic lady is also a loving grandmomma to two adorable grandkids by her daughter Samantha, whom she visits regularly in Europe.
It was Lulu’s daughter and very capable assistant, Jessica Tan Gan, who realized that her mother was turning into a golden senior and there wasn’t any celebration planned. So, in less than a week, a surprise party was set up in their Makati home that included a tight-knit group of 50 persons — close friends plus her fashion circle composed of designers and photographers.
Keeping the plans under cover wasn’t too difficult because the busy lady never realized that there was a dinner party in her own home. Supportive husband Josef Gueta and efficient Jessica made sure everything would be kept under wraps until it was time for Lulu to come home after a busy day’s work. Only when she entered her own front door did Lulu realize there were lots of well wishers who boisterously sung “Happy Birthday” upon her arrival.
A few days after, a ladies’ group hosted an intimate dinner to help her celebrate by conspiring to wear their own Lulu dresses in her honor. A number of them arrived in her vintage Filipiniana, while others wore the versatile knits and silk tops that the designer is known for.
Owners of Lulu’s clothes realize that it makes good fashion and money sense because the designs always remain in style no matter what decade it was acquired.
