Classes in 78 Mayon affected schools resume
MANILA, Philippines - Classes in all 78 schools affected by Mayon Volcano’s abnormal activity have resumed, the Department of Education (DepEd) reported yesterday.
However, students in 40 schools, which are being used as evacuation centers, continue to hold classes in temporary classrooms.
DepEd said there are around 55,000 students in the affected public elementary and high schools.
The DepEd field offices are finalizing arrangements for procurement and distribution of 15,000 chairs and 300 temporary learning spaces for the schools serving as evacuation centers, it said.
DepEd has called on the public to donate tents, tarps, chairs, and learner’s kits for the affected students.
As of Tuesday, donors have pledged around 12,000 learner’s kits and 190 TLS to the agency, the DepEd said.
“The department will arrange its transport and deployment, if needed,” it said.
Based on the latest report of Phivolcs, two volcanic earthquakes and rockfall events were recorded around Mayon during the past 24 hours.
