35, and still growing

WRY BREAD - Philip Cu-Unjieng - The Philippine Star

At my age, when it comes to hair care, it’s all about protect and preserve. I can pat myself on the back and think that thanks to my parents’ genes, I have not yet gone the route of The Bold and the Bald; and what receding hairline or hair thickness issues I may have are still what many others my age would call manageable and in check.

I read all about how hair strands will, by nature, fall or be found on the bathroom floor each time I shampoo or shower but when all the counting is said and done, I also count myself lucky that other than the area where I regularly part my hair, I still possess what others would consider a full head of hair. However, I am not ready to just let nature take its course and if “protect and preserve” means finding allies in delaying or retarding significant hair loss, then one trusted ally for several years now has been Svenson.

Celebrating its 35th year of business in the Philippines, Svenson is a sister company of Facial Care, Marie France and For Men — all trusted names in their respective special fields of service, and via their longevity, prove that they are doing something right. Sensitivity to their clientele’s needs, providing a high and maintained level of service and being ready to absorb technological advances and invest in the latest of machines and aids all add up to a provenance and record of service that now has decades under its belt. Noninvasive is a key to what these companies offer and given my low threshold for pain, I can only be thankful for what they stand for, and how a particular lofty standard of service is part of the corporate equity.

My regular protocol at Svenson consists of Revage treatments and the booster regimen. Revage is the Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) that stimulates hair growth and reduces hair loss by encouraging cell metabolism and protein synthesis. It is a metal boxed contraption placed over my head and with a ticking timer in place, my scalp is subjected to the low-level laser beams. This low-level light has a low absorption rate in human tissue and can be deemed very safe. While medical studies are still divided on its effectivity, there is over 30 years of research promoting the treatment and there definitely is no question regarding its safety. On the principle of “no harm, no foul” and on the wing and prayer that it does work, have been happy and conscientious with my Revage sessions.

Utilizing a Scalpmaster airbrush device, the SVH boosters are directly applied to my scalp efficiently and manually massaged. These are scalp vitamin treatments that likewise stimulate growth and strengthen the strands and follicles that one is still in possession of. Infrared lamps assist in the absorption of the boosters. Cooling and refreshing, the treatment shouldn’t be washed off for at least three hours to encourage the deep absorption of the solutions in the scalp and hair roots. Loved how technology and instruments, such as the painter’s airbrush, have been adapted for hair care use.

Svenson is careful on its claims. Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) will state that where one is already bald, there is no noninvasive way to make hair suddenly sprout in those affected areas. Rather, Svenson is about being precautionary and caring for your hair in the best way possible. It really is never too early to combat the onset of MPB as nowadays, stress is just one of the many factors that can contribute to its happening. The treatments I get at Svenson and the home products I use — such as the Bio Stim Morning and Night Tonics, and its shampoos and conditioners — are all part of the steps I take to try and play this conservation game versus the tandem team of Mother Nature and Father Time.
