This year’s fashion parade on the red carpet, however, has comparatively become less exciting

MANILA, Philippines - Last Monday’s 88th Academy Awards once again rolled out one of the relevant pendulums of Hollywood fashion  the celebrated red carpet. Year after year, celebrities, A-listers and aspiring talents walk on the red carpet and their allure is put under the lens, under the spotlight.

Every year, the glamorous formal event can be seen live from all over the world and a best-dressed actor can be an instant fashion star. Both the fashion world and the cinematic world spend grueling weeks of preparation for this occasion to come up with a look, which will hopefully create a style statement that will land on the pages of Vogue and the likes or on relevant social media platforms.

Top designers and A-list fashion stylists with their entire teams source out the most beautiful, authentic, uncommon or coveted pieces from gowns to shoes to jewelry. What’s more interesting today is that the Oscars red carpet is no longer limited to the biggest stars. The seriousness of red-carpet dressing has covered all — from the seasoned or up-and-coming actors to the wannabes.

This year’s fashion parade on the red carpet, however, has comparatively become less exciting. The usual best dressed celebrities remain true to their fashion titles with less than a handful of young actors adding to the list. The designer pieces were not so spectacular or even memorable due to the fact that the “red carpet” has created a stereotype look that has become way too familiar. Fashion is all about the now or making the old new. What’s happening is that fashion parade at the Oscars has slowly succumbed to mainstream commercialism. To be named best dressed is an honor where one is celebrated for a look that’s seamlessly immortalized. Though the growing decline of red-carpet glam among many Hollywood celebrities has been noticed in recent years, a few standouts remain a cut above the rest.
