Remember never to forget!

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Ballescas - The Freeman

In 1986, from February 22 to 24, the Filipinos who mustered their courage and be counted among those who protested against the Marcos dictatorship continued to swell at EDSA. Similar movements were observed in many other parts of the country as well.

No one knew what would happen next, whether their protest would end up violently --whether the dictator Marcos would unleash the full force of his military vs. the millions of Filipino people in the streets of EDSA or not.

Countless Filipinos were abducted, tortured, and killed during the Marcos dictatorship so the Filipino people at EDSA knew that their protest could end in their losing their own lives in exchange for the freedom they now clamored for, together.

To this date, many victims of the Marcos dictatorship have remained unaccounted for, most likely killed because of their fight vs. the dictator.

Despite the threat of detention, torture, or even death, millions of Filipinos marched and stayed in EDSA for days until reckoning day dawned. They were determined and ready as they defiantly shouted “tama na, sobra na, palitan na!”

By February 25, the millions in EDSA went wild upon hearing the news that the dictator Marcos had fled the Philippines! Finally, the overstaying dictator/his family realized/saw the Filipinos’ wrath and the real end of the Marcos authoritarian regime.

There was euphoria in the streets, prayers/tears/rejoicing/mixed emotions/and responses among the millions that victoriously reclaimed freedom for all Filipinos and the Philippines!

Magkaisa! Unity! People Power! Bloodless toppling of a dictator by the Filipino people! Handog ng Pilipino sa mundo! That was a historic gift Filipinos handed the world!

Let all Filipinos across generations remember never to forget their courage/their oneness as a people in deposing, without any bloodshed, an abusive megalomaniac!

Tatak Filipino! Onli en da Pinas.

The dictator’s son, however, is now in power.

Did Filipinos forget to remember EDSA, their power as a people, their fight for freedom?

For truth-and freedom-loving Filipinos, NO, NEVER!

Did the newly elected officials of this present post-EDSA regime really have the genuine mandate from the Filipino people?

Until now, electoral fraud remains unanswered. The genuine winners of the last/previous elections are still waiting for truth to install them in power.

There have been many attempts to revise history, especially that portion where people power shone radiantly throughout history/throughout the world, especially that period in our past when a dictator who thought he would reign forever was humbled/overthrown by freedom loving/united Filipinos.

February 25, 2024 is not even declared a holiday by the son of the former dictator.

Are more Filipinos forgetting People Power, EDSA, February 25?

Gratefully, Filipinos continue to remember and may the number of those who do remember increase and reach millions or more, like the multitude of Filipinos at EDSA and other protest points throughout the country in 1986!

Remembering February 25, 1986 also recalls/honors all those who offered their lives so that Filipinos continue to have their freedom and rights to life, to speech, to assembly, and more.

EDSA People Power was ushered in with a National Day of Prayer and Action last February 23.

February 25 will start, in the morning, with the Freedom Ride at Ayala, Makati, with the theme Buhay ang EDSA (EDSA Lives!) Cancel CHACHA!

Filipinos should also remember that the charter the present Congress is eagerly railroading to change is the 1986 Constitution! Yes, CANCEL CHACHA!

The EDSA Story: A People’s Victory, a Nation’s Glory will follow in Club Filipino in San Juan City.

#EDSAKAHITSAAN Musical Event, with food and merchandise booths, will be held at the People Power Monument in Quezon City!

Probe is sharing a documentary playlist of important EDSA stories produced in the last 30 years.

Let us all do our share to remember NEVER to forget EDSA PEOPLE POWER!
