CEBU, Philippines — More Cebuanos are now getting interested to adopt rescued cats and dogs, including Aspins or Asong Pinoy, Dr. Alice Utlang, Cebu City veterinarian, said.

From 93 in 2023, The Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) reported that in 2024, 204 cats and dogs have been adopted.

Utlang said she is pleased with this development as this abandoned cats and dogs got another chance at life.

“Ang atong adoption is promising. Now, this year, just for the month of January, mga almost 10 ang na-adopt, iring ug iro. So, we are happy for that,” Utlang said, through the Cebu City’s Public Information Office.

More to it, Utlang noted that more individuals are now open on adopting Aspins or those dogs that are not highbreed.

“Ubay-ubay na sad ang nakasabot nga ang asong pinoy, bisan tuod ang nawong dili kaayo kagwapohan, pero the love that they give sa mo-adopt, plus kuan sad siya, kanang sweet noh basta ayohon lang nimo og atiman,” Utlang said.

The City veterinarian attributed this to the massive campaign on adoption of rescued cats and dogs online.

At the moment, there are 104 dogs currently under DVMF’s care including puppies that are up for adoption.

“Please don’t shop but adopt. Give our asong pinoy a home. Ang proseso ra gyud is you come here in the office, you choose asa ana nga na-impound nga iro,” Utlang said.

For those who are planning to adopt either cats or dogs, Utlang reminded them to be responsible enough to take care of them.

“Naa kay responsibilidad gyud og magbuhi ka og hayop.Naa ba kay time? Importante kaayo kay og wa kay time luoy imong iro. Or naa ba kay money, or naa ba kay sweldo? Kay unsa may ipalit nimo og food, especially dog food. Nya, dad-on sa vet ang imong iro--ipa-checkup nimo, ipa-deworm, pabakunahan. So, mao nay among gipangayo diri. Ug nakapasar siya madala niya ang iro,” she said.  JG (CEBU NEWS)
